The Scores Are In!

We are excited to share some incredible news about the outstanding growth and achievements our scholar-activists demonstrated on the DC CAPE Assessment during the 2023 school year. These wins highlight the hard work, dedication, and perseverance of our scholar-activists, families, and staff. We are incredibly proud of our progress and deeply committed to continuing this trajectory of growth in the upcoming school year.


About DC CAPE Proficiency: 

  • PARCC level 4+ is the bar for being “on-track to take college level coursework without remediation”.

  • PARCC level 3 in the development process was originally called “adequate command of content”


Here are some of the key wins and moments of celebration:


Scholar-Activists with Disabilities:

  • ELA: A 14% increase from SY22-23 in the number of scholar-activists with disabilities earning a 3+.

  • Math: An 11% increase in the number of scholar-activists with disabilities earning a 3+, and an increase in those meeting their growth-to-proficiency targets.

  • ELA and Math: Our scholars-activists with disabilities outperformed the charter sector in ELA for 3+.


Latino/Latina Scholar-Activists:

  • ELA: A 16% increase in those earning a 3+ and an 8% increase in those earning a 4+.

  • Math: A 19% increase in those earning a 3+, with more students meeting their growth-to-proficiency targets.

  • ELA and Math: Our Latino scholar-activists  outperformed the charter sector for both 3+ and 4+ in ELA, and they also outperformed the charter sector in math proficiency.


Multilingual Scholar-Activists:

  • ELA: A 19% increase in scholar-activists earning a 3+.

  • Math: A 23% increase in those earning a 3+, with more students meeting their growth-to-proficiency targets.


Black Scholar-Activists:

  • ELA: Black scholar-activists at SJS outperformed the charter sector for 3+ in ELA.


Grade-Level Highlights:

  • 5th Grade ELA: A 13% increase in scholar-activists earning a 3+ and a 14% increase in those earning a 4+.

  • 6th Grade Math: A 6% increase in those earning a 3+ and more scholar-activists meeting growth-to-proficiency targets.

  • 7th Grade ELA and Math: A 6% increase in scholar-activists earning a 3+ and a 7% increase in those earning a 4+ in ELA. In math, there was a 20% increase in those earning a 3+ and a 14% increase in those earning a 4+. Additionally, 7th graders outperformed the charter sector for both 3+ and 4+ in ELA, with our Hispanic students excelling in math proficiency as well.

  • 8th Grade ELA: A 7% increase in scholar-activists earning a 4+.

These results are a testament to the commitment and dedication of our scholar-activists, and we couldn’t be prouder. While we celebrate these victories, we remain dedicated to making even more growth this school year. Together, we will continue to push boundaries, support our students, and strive for excellence in all we do.
